okay i have been reading alote of post and read where someone has asked what is the difference between coolant temp and oil temp before u start your truck. well i did that this morning and my oil temp was 25.6 and coolant temp was 30. what is this telling me. i hope its good news and somthing easy to fix if not
Cold thats normal. There isn't enough info to determine if there is a problem just from that. The eot ect temp difference is reffered to as your delta and is used in determining if your oil cooler is clogged or becoming clogged. The most accurate way to determine this is by driving around 70mph for about 15-20mins. If your delta is over 10deg you cooler is becoming clogged, over 15 it usually is clogged.
thx i new about delta mine are getting close pulling a hill empty delta get about 13 or so but cool back down i seen 190 coolant and about 206 eot but nothing worse cruzing down the highway i have seen 187 ect and 197 eot so it getting close but still good. was just woundering y they ask for cold temps for. didn't know if that is how u tell if a sensor is bad or what thx tho
You know, this actually brings up something I've been wondering about.
Let's say you do a long 12 hour, over night cold soak on it. Let's assume ambient outside temp is 40F. You turn your key on and ECT = 41 and EOT = 45. That's a 4 degree difference. Do you factor this in when reading hot temps? Or do you have a bad EOT sensor?
My truck is not a daily driver. It will sit for several days. I have had 3 different Edge monitors. Platinum, original Insight and a CS. That said, EOT and ECT at start up are always within 1 or 2 degrees. That goes for the tranny temp too. Most of the time all 3 are the same. All trucks are different...
Yes the point of asking about the temps cold is to see how accurate the sensor reading are. If the air temp is 60* overnight the oil and coolant temps should be close to 60* as well. It does depend though on how fast the air temp changes. The coolant will warm and cool slower than the air temp and the oil even slower than that...
So really to get any real info from this you would need a good long soak at a constant temp to have the air, coolant and oil all at the same temp at the same time. Then your temp readings will tell you something useful.
Having said all that, in the morning my coolant temp (when I'm not plugged in) is usually within a degree or two of air temp and the oil is no more than one or two degrees cooler (never warmer). If I was seeing a 5-10 degree difference EVERY morning I'd be wondering about a sensor issue. Hope that helps some.
Okay I will check it again tommow the truck will have set for 48 hours or more so if it still has the same difference I will replace the oil temp sensor and see if it is any better
imo, after sitting that long, the temps should be the same without plugging in. plugged in, the ect will always be higher. in my 04, the block heater was hot enough to keep frost off the front window, the 05 dosent do that.
