yes gearhead will write the srl tune to shut off the egr. Benefits are so that a egr code will not activate. I would still advise to leave egr plugged in... Alot of guys including myself have noticed loss of boost pressure when the egr is unplugged.
I wouldn't do it --- just keep it clean (every 5K or so) and/or look at an outright delete kit. The EGR IS the primary reason for 6.0L issues and accounts for a large portion of the complaints you see on this board.
My 6.0L has not one bulletproofing item on it and with 110K miles I'm keeping my fingers crossed ----with turn it into a true VT365 this summer -- meaning the turbo, injectors, and electronic configuration get "returned" to International parts.
