What's going on guys. I haven't been on the org. much lately been swamped with midterms and work. Once that stuff clears up a bit I should be back on here posting random garbage:hehe:
So tonight I got to crunching some numbers. The truck fund, as it sits, is about 7k. I make about $70 a week during the school year and about $150 a week during the summer. I figure by the time I actually am ready to buy a truck, I should have 20k. After realizing this, I was very discouraged as I have been greatly looking forward to the day I own my own truck. So then I had an idea. A couple months ago, a member on here bought a wrecked 6.0 for real cheap, a couple grand I think. And he just posted a week or so ago showing the finished product and it looks fantastic. I would kill for a truck like that. So what do you guys think about me getting a wrecked 6.0 now and slowly rebuilding it so that in a couple years, it's a sweet rig? Would it be cost-effective or should I just scrap my 6.0 dream altogether??
Well, when do you plan on reaching this goal of $20k? If it's 2 years from now or more, I'd say look for a 6.4. They're already coming down in price being as 08s are 5 years old now. And you should be able to find a pretty nice truck for $20k or so.
But, if you have your heart set on one and find a decent deal on a wrecked 6.0 for just a few grand that you feel is something you have the ability and funding to repair, I'd say go for it.
The guy who bought that wrecked truck had his own shop to work on it in and his dad has his own body shop as a business. Keep that in mind. It's a pretty large undertaking.
i wouldn't buy a wrecked truck... i would find a cheap 6.0L from a dealer.. i paid 38K for mine and it had VERY low miles for a diesel.. 48K miles i think? and it has every option for 2007.. i'm sure you could find an 05-06 that's fairly good for 25-30K.. I'd wait the few years and get really good at working on diesels.. I'm only 19.. so your dream is not impossible! and my parents didn't pay either
25-30k??? Thats a rip off. I got my 2005 f250 CC for 16.4k at a bank auction two years ago. I have only had to replace an alternator. Other than that 60 second job, it runs great. My recomendation would be to watch the federal, state, and bank auctions for seizures and repo trucks. I see a 2003 cc on craigslist in my area selling for 14k.
It depends on what you can find. There is no better feeling in the world than driving down the road with a former basket case knowing you brought it back to life. That said, do your research and know what you are getting into before you jump into this.
I'd say I'd like to have the money in a year and a half. I was just wondering if it would be cheaper and/or more beneficial to me. And would it be easier to get a wrecked truck with a perfectly fine motor or a good truck with no motor? Great advice guys, it is appreciated
From the figures you posted, doesn't sound like you'll have the money for almost another 3 years.
$70x40weeks= $2800
+
$150x12weeks=$1800
Not trying to be a jerk, but that just seems ridiculous. When I was in high school, nobody had a diesel, everyone played around with yota's, jeep's, and chevy's. Keep in mind I was in highschool 5 years ago.
Over half those kids now drive diesels cause they just waited till they got a full time job and could actually afford it.
If you are dead set on it then I guess give it hell, but sounds like you'll miss out on a high school experience trying to save every penny for 3 more years.

look I'm 19 years old and i got a diesel truck and a mustang cobra.. i took out a loan and that was the end of it.. the mustang cobra cost me 10K and the truck cost 45K after interest (got 7% interest rate) if you have 7-10K.. thats a pretty good down payment on a truck.. and if your parents are willing to co-sign a loan your set.. i pay for my truck, maintenance, and fuel.. don't let people tell you that your dreams are impossible.. you never know what life wil throw your way in the future.. when i went to high school i didn't have a car till i graduated mean while my friends drive 535xi's and Harley Davidson edition powerstrokes.. when i graduated i bought my two dream vehicles and you know what I'm happy i did cause I now have cancer.. if i spent my time listening to the people who said i can't i wouldn't have.. and I'd probably sit there wishing i could work on a truck or could have a nice car and dreaming of what i'd never have.. If i die tomorrow, next week, in a year or in 30 years i can say i have lived some of my dreams i have seen 6.0Ls go for 15K with 180K miles on them.. i don't think thats impossible.. you don't need a lariat or a king wranch.. if you got a NEW 2012 base model with JUST a diesel it would cost 45K.. thats RCSB.. if you cgot a 2005 RCSB truck thats base model everything except with a diesel you could EASILY afford it
My vote is to find one that is in good shape and just has a blown motor. Preferably one that popped the headgaskets. I have seen more than once a truck that is just barely out of warranty and the owner doesn't want to pay to have the heads done so sells it instead. In high school, I had more time than money and more money than sense, so that was kinda what I did, except back then 6.0s were on the showroom floor and i was playing with an old F150.
There are plenty of guys who have shown you don't need a big fancy shop or all kinds of tools to do heads on a 6.0, and it can be done fairly cheap, especially if you are smart about it.
Also, if you own the truck with that income still, just be ready for the expenses. Depending how far you live from school and work could cost you $70 for fuel a week.
Depending on where you live could cost you $180-$2000 to register it the first time.
I was just going to say something similar. An oil change is $120 alone. I've spent a heck of a lot more on maintenance than I thought I was going to but I just love driving this thing. If you buy a truck with a blown motor that may be the way to go. Heck looking back on it I should have done that. Even dropping a motor in a $8k truck you'd be under $15k. That takes time though. That said, I owned my truck for my last year of college and now I work full time so it can be done. Good luck man!:thumb:
I'll be honest with you, I love my truck. But when it comes time to do maintenance I hate it! Just think about giving up several hundred dollars at a shot every few months. Not only that, when problems come up. I almost $6,000 6 months ago doing oil cooler, and head studs and gaskets. now with 10* deltas I'll be doing an oil cooler here in another few months.
At the end of the day, it's all about what you can afford. If you can swing the payments and really want the truck then go for it! Just take into consideration studding the truck and maintenance. I have money set aside for studs as soon as my truck shows any signs of a problem. Just be financially prepared and conscious is what I'm trying to say.:thumb:
So I'm really conflicted right now. I have a 2004 Ram at my dealership that my boss says he'll sell me for 6 grand. It is very tempting. Please no hate for it being a dodge as I will eventually be in a Ford. The only bad side is the ram has 150k miles but other than that it is in great shape. To he honest guys, I might go for it. I figure it'll give me a truck for at least a couple years until I can COMFORTABLY afford a nice diesel truck. I could afford a 6.0 but would be real tight. Gas every week alone would consume most of my paycheck let alone and repairs. Any thoughts guys???? I'm still Ford to the bone but this is tempting......
Unless it's a cummins, you could always get an F150 for around that cost. My buddy beats the piss out of his f150 and it now has 130k miles and running strong. Just a thought...:thumb:
I sold my 2000 F-150 Lariat w/ upgrades and 130k miles for $6500. I loved that truck. Reliable, cheap to work on, and slow as crap (kept me out of trouble). I'd say get an older F-150.
I'd say save up and find a good one with low miles. That's what I did and I got an 06 with 41000 mi. I saved for 3 years and got a loan for the rest of it but idk if u would want a loan. Btw I'm 19 and work full time it was hard in HS to want that nice truck and not have it but its worth the wait.
