One of our other Moderators (turbotime) swears by Amsoil. I'll be switching over next change and I'll most likely go with her recommendation.

I will switch to Rotella synthetic next oil change - for sure by next week. I have used synthetic oil for years in my gasoline engines. They seal the rings better as I have experienced phenominal reduction in oil consumption in my 1990 Olds Toronado. I have also seen better fuel economy. I have used (gasoline engine) Mobil1, Syntec, Quaker State and Texaco. I bought the Rotella because it is cheap ($14.00 and change per gallon at Wal-Mart) and it states on the package that it meets Ford's and Navistar's requirements for use in diesel truck engines.

Has anyone had an oil analysis done on their rig yet? I'm kinda curious about it.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with Amsoil - or Rotella (which is what I run now - non synth though).

AmsOil all the way!

If only you could see the inside of my husbands little pick-up. It is a 1997 Nissan that he bough new, off the lot. It currently has OVER 221,000 miles on it. The only thing that he has changed in it is the alternator. I mean, even the brakes are origional here! ... OK, on with the point here ...

Inside of the engine block, it is as shiny as they are before they are even installed!!! I will see if I can actually get a picture to depict this for you all at some point here. I will not run another oil in any rig that I plan on having for a long time again. Needless to say, the PSD gets it too. It runs so much smoother that I could hear the difference in the engine when we first got the truck and switched it over.

Hope this helps!

I am using Amsoil

Have been using Amsoil 15-40W Diesel & Marine oil in my diesel engines since 2000 including a Cat engine in my motorhome. Have used various full synthetic oils in gas engines since 1986. In all the reports and comparisons I have seen, Amsoil outperforms by a wide margin. Wouldn't use anything else!!

Y'all have me convinced. I'm moving over to Amsoil synth next change. NOT that I feel there is anything wrong with Rotella by any means. It's just hard not to change with all the great things I hear about Amsoil.

I looked at AmsOil. I could not get it any cheaper than about $80.00 an oil change including shipping and handling. Anyone have any suggestions on price? I 100% believe in oil analysis; however, most of what I saw for price is about $25.00 per test plus 2 quarts of oil. Rotella costs me $64.00 per oil change. True, oil itself does not go bad unless it becomes contaminated; however, after a time, the additives do deplete and they must be replaced. Until I reach 100k, I will probably stick with changing my oil every 5k as is recommended by the OEM. I welcome any comments. To me, this is a wide-open topic with lots of room for discussion.

I use rotella reg oil. My dad owns a trucking compnay and he runs c-15 CATS and run nothing but rotella. Rotella is well know good oil for diesel motors. I think synthetic is not worth the xtra money. Just my 2cents worth.

With Amsoil you can extend oil change intervals to beyond any other synthetic oils, Go to www.performanceoiltechnology.com/ to see the results of "Four Ball Tests" which compares wear scarring from differnt manufacture's oil. They have sites for 7.3L Powerstroke Engine owners and 6.0L Powerstroke Owners. You can extend oil changes to 100K with the use of Off-Line filters which filter oil down to 1 micron. I use one made by Filtakleen but Amsoil also make them
