Diesel-Electric Retrofit

I've been reading a ton about diesel-electric boat and train engines. I've found some sites on the 'net about heavy-duty OTR trucks coming out with diesel-electric running 20% biodiesel getting 60% better mpg than stock (think high-20s/low-30s). I read about some guy in Kansas modding up Hummers to get 25 mpg or so using stock GM parts.

I've been thinking about getting another diesel truck to play around with and see if I can figure out a driveline retrofit for an electric motor assist. One thought is to put the electric motor into the rear transfer case and weld up some battery boxes on the inside of the frame.

Anyone know of others doing the something similar?
