Long Term Storage
I have a 2004 Excursion that I need to store for a long time. Maybe several years. I have been stationed overseas for 3 years possibly longer. I have the option to store it at a facility that will run it once a month and send me reports. However, I would like the ability to use it when I come back to the states for leave probably once a year. I do not have anyone to leave it with or to drive it once in awhile.
So the big question is what can I expect if it is not driven for a year or longer? What should I do to prep it if I do store it myself? (more than likely in a climate controlled storage facility in Florida) |

I'd say you shouldn't have to do much with it. I'd put some baking soda boxes inside to help soak up any moisture that would cause a musty smell. Disconnect the batteries, dump some fuel treatment in the tank and run it for a little. But since it will be inside I'd say it should be ok to leave it be.

If possible, maybe put it up on jack stands so if the tires go flat, it doesn't ruin them.

Make sure the tank is filled right up.

DO NOT put it in the military storage you mentioned. When I was deployed alot of guys in my unit got screwed by that system.

I'd say to put fuel treatment in the system, jack it up, and hope for the best. Be prepared to buy new batteries when you return. I wouldn't keep it at the place that drives it, it won't need it.

I really appreciate the input. I was mistaken it will not be climate controled but will be inside. As for jacking it for the tires. I will need new tires when I return anyway so should I worry about that too much? It is easy to do I am just curious.
What kind of fuel treatment? I currently use Archoil products. g2shuck---what were some of the issues your friends had with the gov storage? |
