Upfitter switch heated mirror mod

I got tired of dirty mirrors all the time so I put the heated mirrors on my #3 upfitter switch so I can control when they're on. I spliced a piece of wire on the wire for #3 switch (orange with a yellow stripe) then I cut a fuse in half and spliced the spade from the fuse on the wire from the switch. On my 06 the fuse for the heated mirrors is #39 which I inserted the wire on the dead side of the fuse.

If this works I'm doing it! I bought a 05 F150 brand new which has a switch for the heated mirrors. When I traded it in on my F350 I spent forever looking for that damn switch until if figured out they're automatic. Since then I've wished I could have that switch back. One question... What was the fuse rated for you had to take out and what's the fuse rating on switches 3&4?

I thought that they only came on when you had the defrost on. Is that not correct?

The fuse I took out was 15amp and the switch is 10 amp.

My mirrors were warm all the time.

That is only true if you have an Excursion. All of the pickups are when the key is on, the mirrors are on.

I did that mod a little bit ago and it works great. Now the mirrors do not have spots on them all the time. I did mine a little different. I pulled the wire our of the back of the fuse block and wired it in that way.

Check out post # 23 and 35 of this thread. Same result just a little different way of doing it. A little bit cleaner of a look.

I just happen to have a spare upfitter switch and it just happens to be #3 which is now going to be heated mirrors. No need for them to be on all the time. Thanks DieselV8 for the idea and proceedure you used.

On my Excursion the mirror heat only comes on when the rear window defrost is switched on so maybe just buy the part and it should be easy to just pop it into the dash.

Does the little defrost icon in the mirror light up when its defrosting the mirror ?

Nope, but the switch has a LED (I think) light and the icon picture lights up.
