Electrical heat is caused from resistance or a bad connection.
I am not sure on the destination of the smaller wire. Kinda thought the one on my 7.3 was for the gp's but could be wrong. Charge wire from alt is also likely.
Take that wire off and wire brush all surfaces of the connection. While things are apart and if you have a meter, check the resistance in the wires to see if they are damaged. When putting back together you can use dielectric grease to help with corrosion.
I think the big wire running down either goes to a starter solenoid (mine) or maybe right to the starter.
when you have the battery post terminals off, wire brush those and the connectors.
