Use kitchen degreaser to clean engine?

Hi guys,
I really need to clean my engine. I´m embarased after watching your engines. When I did the EGR delete and change the oil cooler, everthing there was a mixture of oil, leaves, sand, pieces of plastic and other crap. really nasty. I just cleaned a little by hand, just to avoid dirt going into the admision. But now I think its time to do a deep cleaning job. The thing is... I dont live in the USA, so the cleaning products you mention are not available. I´m planning to use dish washer degreaser, throw it on the engine compartment, wait some minutes and then wash everything with the garden hose. I know I have to cover the alternator and intake. What about the FICM? It has a broken connector (plastic part) that i had to glue some months ago. What else do I have to avoid? Its a 6.0 2003. Tempreature at home is 20°C (68°F).I do a lot of sand dune weekend trips, so you can figure sand everywhere. I´m also planning a chasis clean/lub job.
Any advice?
I´ll take pics before/after.

thanks
arriero
