Use kitchen degreaser to clean engine?

Hi guys,
I really need to clean my engine. Im embarased after watching your engines. When I did the EGR delete and change the oil cooler, everthing there was a mixture of oil, leaves, sand, pieces of plastic and other crap. really nasty. I just cleaned a little by hand, just to avoid dirt going into the admision. But now I think its time to do a deep cleaning job. The thing is... I dont live in the USA, so the cleaning products you mention are not available. Im planning to use dish washer degreaser, throw it on the engine compartment, wait some minutes and then wash everything with the garden hose. I know I have to cover the alternator and intake. What about the FICM? It has a broken connector (plastic part) that i had to glue some months ago. What else do I have to avoid? Its a 6.0 2003. Tempreature at home is 20C (68F).I do a lot of sand dune weekend trips, so you can figure sand everywhere. Im also planning a chasis clean/lub job.
Any advice?
Ill take pics before/after.

thanks
arriero
