Sinister Filter Install Questions

So, I installed the Sinister coolant filter kit today. Nice kit, I'd highly recommend it. Good materials and a nice appearance...

Anyway, I installed the supply hose on the firewall side of the heater control valve...wasn't really thinking about it when I did it and the fit was better there. The instructions didn't mention anything about the valve so...further research suggests that I may have installed it on the incorrect side of the valve and that it will only be filtering coolant with the heater on. (It's definitely not on here in MS in August...)

My confusion comes from the fact that fluid is definitely getting to the is in coolant temperature hot...and I can feel fluid running through it. Can anyone explain?
