New guy with Q's

Hello, new to the forum and new to Ford's. I bought a 2005 CCSB KR with 52000 miles last friday, along with a $1600 extended warranty. Drove 400 miles home and 200 miles through the weekend, wrench light comes on. Took to the dealer on monday and find out I have $2500- $5000 dollars worth of oil cooler and EGR cooler issues. The warranty will cover this, supposedly. My question is after this is done and I swap to CAT ELC, would the oil cooler plug again? I think I'll keep it factory while I have the warranty and save my $'s to bullet proof later.

Thanks - JB

Welcome to the .ORG!!

Yes it is possible for it to clog again. Since you have a warranty don't spend money bulletproofing yet save your money up so when your warranty is up you can go all out on all your bulletproofing needs.

For now I would get a monitor installed. There are a few different options. Personally I like the dashboss setup if you have an iPhone iPod touch or an iPad for $180 you can monitor everything that the truck ECM monitors minus the fuel pressure but for an extra $20 you can monitor that too. and you can add an egt probe to it later if you want to watch your egt's.

There is the edge insight cs/cts that will do the same but to monitor everything plus fuel pressure and egt's you have to buy their EAS and egt probe and fuel pressure sending unit. Total cost of a full edge cts is around $600

There is also scangauge II which is a good monitor yet basic compared to the others and can monitor all the same as the others with the exception of fuel pressure and egt's however there isn't anyway to expand onto it. I think the cost of those are around $200-250.

There is also one for a droid phone but I don't have a droid so I'm unfimiliar with it.

All the above choices are good and one of them on your truck is a necessity for the life of your 6.0l powerstroke. Good luck.

I would check with the dealership as to whether or not they care. The reason I am saying that is with extended warranties they try to get out of paying for it for any reason possible and if flushing and switching to an elc coolant they may try to void your warranty. Just a heads up. After the warranty is expired then yes definitely get rid of the ford gold junk and replace with a good fully formulated ec-1 rated elc with 0 silicate in it. And add a coolant filter afterwards as well.

Update and New Question

So after days of back and forth with two dealerships and warranty people it comes down to this, the warranty company wants me to pay for tear down to the oil cooler and then if its leaking oil into coolant or visa versa they will pay me back and for a new EGR cooler and Oil cooler. If it is plugged they say its not broken and therefore not covered under warranty. I told them no way, and the dealership I bought it from says they are going to try and get the warranty company to cover it since it is a full comprehensive warranty. If the warranty company wont cover it I'm trying to get the dealership to do it no charge, they are not sure on that and will at a minimum at least pay for all the parts and I can fix it myself. so they say...

My question is if anybody has had a similar experience and whether or not I can just return the truck to the dealer and get my $ and trade in back. I know the contract says after signing its mine with no guarantees and I havent made it to the dealer to pull the paperwork out of the glove box and check all the fine print. They say that it *may* be an option, but I want to know what rights I have.

The truck runs great and I really like it but I dont want to have to absorb up to $5,000 right of the bat, maybe chalk it up to being a 6.0 rookie, take the parts I can get, fix it myself and cut my losses. guess I'll see.

If the truck is at the dealership still have them test the deltas. If the oil temp is 15* higher than the coolant temp than your oil cooler IS clogged and needs REBUILT there is a difference between rebuilding it and replacing it. Replacing the entire oil cooler includes the cooler itself and the oil cooler housing and rebuild means to replace the cooler itself and reuse the housing. This is why I suspect they say it's not broken as the cooler with the housing is like $700 compared to the cooler which is $300. If the truck hasn't had any disqualifying mods or anything done to it than the warranty company is obligated to fix this problem as long as your not doing anything wrong to void the warranty.

This is the problem with all these warranties they will do everything possible to earn your business and get your money. Then once they have your money they do everything possible to keep from paying for the repairs. Threaten them with a lawyer and going to the better business bureau chances are they will take care of it.

As far as returning the truck probably 99% of us couldn't give you a 100% positive answer as we are not lawyers. I would advise getting in touch with a consumer affairs lawyer to deal with the warranty company for repairs and if that don't work then to advise you in a course of action based on your rights as a consumer.

Sorry to hear about this as it is complete bs but that's how these warranty company's work. Is it actually through ford or an aftermarket warranty?

The Dealership that the truck is at has tested the Delta's using the ford method of driving it 15 minutes at 1800 rpm's and saw greater that 15* delta. This dealer ship is in my home town and they have done a good job and been upfront with me on everything. The dealer I bought the truck from is 400 miles away and have been getting their info from the dealer here. They too have been up front and have worked with me on some things. They don't want to outright fix it on acount of the cost and I dont blame them. If I was in there shoes I would be after the warrany company. The warranty company is Zurich and I had heard they were pretty good. I guess I'll call them tomorrow and go the the BBB threat to see what they can do.

Thanks

I would ask if you can pay the extra cost and have the APR studs put back in,when they take it apart.

After running around and trying to get all my troubles figured out with this truck, I finally came to a point where I have no definative answer, the warranty company and dealership will not rebuild the oil cooler because it is not broken. All I have been able to get from them is the oil cooler rebuild kit.

So I have decided to go this route, first I started watching everything as close as I could an found that I am losing a little coolant. I drove it a couple miles and then jacked up the back and pulled the EGR valve. It is a little damp under it, kind of like damp mud made from the coolant and the soot I'm guessing? I have a scanguage on the way so I can get my own readings on the oil cooler. Do you think the EGR cooler is gone as well? There has been no puking from the degas, but there is a tiny bit of white residue around it.
What would you guys who know a lot more than me do? I'm thinking try and get the dealership to look at the EGR cooler and see if its broken. If they wont do nothing, maybe just drive it till it really breaks.

Thanks
