Hairline crack on front timing cover, question...

Hey everyone,
During the process of bulletproofing my 03 6.0, my mechanic called to tell me that he found a tiny hairline crack on the front timing cover, right where the heater hose attaches. My question is, can i weld that vs. spending $500 plus for a new one?? Merely curious. Any input would be great.
