03 Turbo question?
I have a question. Other than buying a 03 turbo from someone who says it is an 03 turbo, or if you yourself pulled it from an 03 engine, How do you know it is an 03 turbo? Reason I ask, is I have a buddy who has a 07 F250 and I cannot hear his turbo like I can mine. I just bought my truck 2 weeks or so ago, and I have had buddy's tell me if I have remove a silencer ring or anything from the turbo as it whistles awesome. Only mods I know of or have done are in my signature. I can hear turbo whistle at idle, and I can goose the throttle and it will spool up and whistle. From what I have seen the previous owner added the aFe intake, but the rest of the truck was stock mechanically as far as I could tell. Is there any kind of markings or part number to tell if it is a different turbo?

Oh, I am not complaining, I love the whistle, just wish I could on occasion blow a little more smoke just because I am a diesel guy, been working on them in the Coast Guard now for 11 years and love to work with diesel, smell diesel and roll coal like diesel!

You could count the turbine blades, but requires to remove the down pipe, use a mirror and count the blades. IIRC, the 03 turbo had 10 blades, the late '04 had 13, and 05-07 had 15.
Or you could just look at the turbo to pedestal mounts. The '03 turbo has the rear mounting bolt going horizontal thru the pedestal and into the turbo. The '04-07 turbos had the rear bolt going vertical thru the turbo and into the pedestal. Pic below, blue circle is the '03, red circle is the 04-07.
