You may want to read this from Diesiel Magazine
New Lubrication Standards For 2016 And Beyond - Diesel Power Magazine
Looks like thick 15w40 will be a thing of the past here shortly. I do realize I misspelled Diesel in the title, thought my iPad would've caught it and corrected it lol. Last edited by Baddestt; 06-24-2012 at 10:58 AM. |

I don't see anything that says 15w40 will be a thing of the past shortly.
CJ4 came out in late 06? You can still buy CI4+ 6yrs later. |

From reading that I take it that all CI-4 oil are also CJ-4 rated. Maybe. But anything that is CJ-4 is already rated for everything below it |

opposite. CJ4 covers CI4+, but CI4+ is not CJ4 rated.
CJ4 was developed for ultra low sulphur/DPF vehicles, it has less ZDDP than CI4+ that it "replaces" So while it meets the "necessary" criteria for use in older vehicles/engines, it's not necessarily better for them. It's actually worse. And when/if they come out with this new oil standard for newer vehicles, it may or may not be better/worse for older engines. BUT, you'll still be able to get the same oil you've been running in your older truck. My point is that 15w40 CI4+ and CJ4 oils aren't going anywhere any time soon. |
