Variable turbo whistle

I have a buddies who's turbo when driving at any speed his turbo whistle is going up and down very noticeably at constant speeds he has the same truck as me an 04 6.0. What could be causing this I thought it wasn't getting enough air so cleaned the filter and that didn't help does the turbo need to be cleaned?

The turbo may need to be cleaned, or it could be the VGT actuator.

Yours might be a later 04 and his might be and early 04 with the 2003 engine/turbo...

03 turbos have a reputation to have a LOUD whistle

I have this same problem and was trying to figure out what it was. When I hold a steady throttle you can hear that the whistle isn't consistant right?

Leads me to believe he is asking about surging, not turbo whistle.

I don't believe it is surging I looked at videos online of turbo surge and it didn't sound the same. Mine happens between 1500-2000 rmp. It's not a quick change in whistle for me its slow. It's hard to describe, ill try and get a video.

My turbo did this for a while but it happened after I did my oil cooler, egr delete and cleaned the turbo. When I got it all bolted back up and was going up and down like you describe. I decided to quit worrying about it as it was slowly getting better and now its just gone all together.

Mine I think was related to air or contaminants in the oil.

Sorry for hijacking your thread. But I don't think it's an '03 turbo because I have mine straight piped and it doesn't quite whistle like '03 videos I've seen on youtube. Not sure what this could be. I may be due for an oil change, I have been waiting for EGR delete to do that. Might try to tackle cleaning the turbo when I do an oil cooler but I really hope this isn't a sign of a bad turbo

No it's not an 03 turbo he has a late model 04 like I do and it is the same thing torx is saying that the turbo whistle is not staying consistent with the rpms. Say your cruising at 45 mph normally your turbo whistle will stay at one pitch his turbo sounds like when your reving the engine while cruising.
