Towing tunes
Alright guys, yes I have searched lol.
Now that that's cleared up I am taking a trip to Moab this fall pulling an older 4runner with a bunch of gear so probably not more than 7-8k pounds but am lookin for advice on tow tunes. I have Matt's beloved 8k and unlimited but am really disappointed with the mileage while towing a small 21 ft boat I got 10-11mpgs hand calculated...that's not good for me! If that's all I can get then it is what is is but I'm lookin at getting tony wildmans tow tune because my brother in law gets about 15mpg while towing a similar load. He has Tony's tow tune so that's why I'm lookin at his, but what about other vendors? What mileage are you seeing going about 65-70? And before you say scparrish was lying about the mileage, I was paying for the fuel all 2100 miles, so I know that's about what his average was while I got about 7-8 in my old half ton. Thanks guys |

8k tow does get bad mileage. But I like it. I get about 1 more mpg running the truck with the stock tune. (pulling around the same load as you) my only other tow tune is my MKM one that's 65hp. It gets slightly better mileage then matts 8k tune. But Matt's tune runs better. im really want to get a IDP tow tune and try it

I love the way it drives but it's expensive, and stock is maybe .5 better but not worth it lol

I never calculated my MPG with any of my tow tunes, so can't help ya. But I do prefer Vivian's agg/tow more than Matt's or Eric's.

I have done around a 7K load coming out of VT last winter when I got married, hauled the wife's Ranger, a 2200# car hauler, and all her household goods. I was running Eric's Tow File from IDP. Great tune averaged around 11-12mpg under that load, averaging 60-65mph. Very good engine braking and pulling power, great EGT's as well (easily managed under 1050*). Very manageable file, with great transmission tuning.

Your running 4.30 gears though right

I run Eric's tune while towing around 6k and I run around 14 mpg if I don't hot rod around too much. If I run it as a DD it gets better mileage than my X street.

That's correct, 4.30's and stock 245/75R17's all terrains.

May have to try a tune or two to see which one my truck likes the best
