5r110 6 Speed
Hi....stoopy question of the day.
They say the 5r110 is a 6 speed tranny ---- does that mean 5 with a OD lock? I ask because on my Insight CTS, I can see it shift 1-5 and then the padlock would eventually appear in 5 (padlock never shows in 1-4). Just want to make sure that I'm not missing something. Thanks! |

NO.... The tranny actually has 6 gears but only uses 4th in very cold temps because 3rd and 4th have very close gear ratios...
The tranny will shift like: 1,2,3,5,6 In very unique circumstances while driving in 6th it might need to downshift into 4th. But like I said... It "IS" a 6 speed tranny but only uses 5 gears at a time |

Actually the 5r110 is 2 trannies in one case, a 2 speed and a 3 speed. The CTS measures shift events, it is not necessarily the gear it is in. because of the gear ratios of the 2 trannies 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th gear is 1.1:1 so it normally skips 4th and shifts 1,2,3,5,6. In very cold (0*) it will shift 1,2,3,4,6. and as mentioned under some rare conditions it will downshift from 6th to 4th, but there is NEVER a 4 to 5 shift. It is almost always 3 to 5. So your CTS is showing you 1,2,3,5,6,lock.

Will have to look into this further. Hopefully it is just the CTS and not the tranny. |

I can almost guarantee you that your Edge is just misreading the info and your tranny is fine...Check into it though

The TorqShift is a 6 speed, more accurately it shifts like this:
1st 1stOD (2nd) 2nd (3rd) 2ndOD (4th) 3rd (5th) 3rdOD (6th) Unlike an AOD or 4R100, OD is used more than just high gear. However, 2ndOD/4th is a 1.09:1 ratio and 3rd/5th is 1:1, therefore, it skips 4th gear. Unless it's like below zero, you won't use 4th gear. When you do use 4th gear, it skips 5th because they are so close together it would be a waste of time. As previously mentioned, Edge only counts the event, NOT the actual gear. Having smoked a tranmission (thanks again Edge ), I had to learn all of this for myself.

"6" speed torqshift 5r110
Is everything said above true for every 5r110?
Reason I ask is in my 03 with the 5r110 it actually shifts into every gear noticeably. Regardless if the programmer is turned up or not it shifts through all six gears |

The last "shift" that you are feeling is the converter locking up. Again, Edge doesn't indicate the gear, it counts the shift events.

Exactly right.
