Re-ring just one cylinder?
2006 engine with 104k on it. Blew a head gasket and partially washed down cylinder #8 with coolant. Its not totally dead but down a good bit from the rest of the cylinders. Is there any reason one couldnt hone that cylinder and put a fresh set of rings in it and run it? The rest of the cylinders are fine. I am hoping to get away without to much cash involved in it at this point. Thanks

I'll be honest you really should mic that cylinder to make sure it's still in spec first. If all is good then go for it.

Can you explain what "not totally dead but down a good bit from the rest of the cylinders" means?
Honing is effectively boring and while not astronomical can lower your compression ratio on that hole. From what I learned from doing high performance gas engines, there is a specific wall clearence that must be maintained for proper fit and function. To answer your question in a word, NO! Check your specs, if you must bore one, do them all. Yes I said bore, these aren't junk yard 302s that you can just slap together, after all. |
