New to me possibly...
Going to head south and look at a 2004 Excursion with teh 6.0. Only planned modifications are 5" exhaust.
Maybe an air intake set up? Which intake is recommended? I loved my Tymar knockoff that I had on my 7.3. I am not looking for huge power gains, or any for that matter, as a tuner is out of the question unless I get studs and egr delete. I know this has been asked 1000 times, but I would appreciate any knowledge you could share for a novice who is going to look at his first 6.0. What are warning signs to look out for? What to listen for while driving the truck? What to look for underneath and in the engine bay? If you were going to look at an '04 Excursion with 122,000 miles, what would be your routine or checklist? Truck is stock from what I understand. Many thanks! |

I would stick with a 4" exhaust. 5" exhaust is only going to cost you extra to buy, more drone in the cab and fight you to get it installed. 4" will be perfect.
No air intake. The stock filter flows well up to 500hp and so you would be better served spending your money on something else. I would monitor the coolant and oil temps on a test drive to ensure the oil cooler isn't clogged. I would also monitor FICM voltage to ensure that it is functioning properly. |

Wanrm it up...run it hard..(up a hill is best), and then check around the degas bottle for any coolant puking.
check for smoke out of the exhuast... white smoke= not good black smoke on a stock truck= most likely not good as it probably needs some work to turbo or EGR Valve... blue smoke=a little is ok...might mean injector work needed (stuck open) |

Thanks guys.
No aftermarket air filter set up. Watch for abnormalities in the engien area and tailpipe. Got it, thanks! |

Have you headed down there yet? And where is there? If you can get your hands on an AE, you'll find it exceptionally useful for determining the health of the engine. I wish I had one before I bought my '04 X. If down south is anywhere near me, you can use mine...

Thanks! I ended up buying the Excursion. I also bought an Edge Insight to monitor all the appropriate temps during the test drive. We drove the suburban down with a trailer behind her, and hauled the suburban back home on the trailer with the Excursion. Did great! |
