holy cow 03 turbo

I'm absolutely in shock. I did the turbo swap in my driveway tonight after the pedestal came in the mail today (I've been waiting for it for 3 weeks).

backstory;

As some of you may have seen my other thread I wasn't really looking for an 03 turbo but a good one showed up at the shop turned in as a core. Well I was going to pay the core charge and take the turbo but I met up with a guy from the boards (rockbound) and he sold me his old 03 turbo with a broken shaft for cheap. I turned his turbo in as a core and now I'm only in $50 for this perfectly good 03 turbo. I actually paid more for the pedestal than the turbo cost me in the end.

So everything is working out good, I cleaned it all up, put a good unison ring in it, new compressor housing o-ring, heat shield etc, and at this point I need to run this turbo before I know for sure if it really is good. So it was kinda cool tonight and I knew it would only take about an hour or so for the engine to cool off after I got home from work. An hour and a half after I started it's sitting there idling and it doesn't really sound a whole lot different to me. A little higher pitched but not any louder. okay whatever, not that impressed yet.

So I check for leaks before it heats up too much, all is good there so I guess I'm going for a ride....

Then I put it in drive and pressed the accelerator to pull out of my driveway.....

and it lets out this SHRILLLLL unlike anything I've ever heard. As many times as I've read about this "jet engine sound" it never occured to me that's what it actually sounds like....and it is ****ing loud too.

I don't know yet. I'm still in shock over the sound.

I thought I wouldn't like a straight pipe at first either but it's grown on me.

Mine at first seemed super super loud, not so much anymore. Ill be cleaning it this weekend. It could just be that my hearing at that pitch is going away lol

That's awesome! Like I said before if and when you want to get rid of that bad boy I'm just down the street and will gladly take it off your hands lol. I love the sound of those turbos. A buddy at work has one and I love hearing it.

When I first got my magnaflow 4" turboback I ran the muffler that came with it. It wasn't too bad, sounded a little different than stock but it was only after I took the muffler out that you could really hear the engine roar. It's that good V8 roar too, I love how the 6.0 sounds.
