is it the same as having an SCT tuner or does it add to the custom tunes I have installed now?

It is in addition to the sct tunes

First get an sct tuner with custom tunes... Then go for tuning your ficm!

Yep, what he said^^^^^^

The Gyphon FICM tuner can be added to ANY programmer (bully dog, Edge, Banks, ect). It programs the FICM separately.

You can even use it as a stand alone, but when you run the higher Hercules or Atlas 80 tune, it would be wise to have a tuner like SCT to program the trans to handle the extra power.
