Dipstick tube removal

How the heck do you get the dipstick tube out of the block on an 05 6.0? I thought it just pulled out doesn't it? I can't budge it and don't want to braek it but can't pull the head with it in unless I remove the exhaust manifold.

The only thing holding it in is an o-ring at the bottom and the nut on the left valve cover bolt. However, if it has never been out, that darn o-ring holds it in pretty good. If you have a assistant have them pull from the top while you grab it with some needle noses from the bottom and pry against the block and up. Maybe try a twisting motion while pulling up.

bismic, thanks. I thought thats all that was holding it but wanted to be sure. I was trying to feel around it and thought I felt a nut which had me confused. Will do. Cheers

I know it's an old thread, but I couldn't get mine out to save my life (hammer, deadblow, vice grips, PB Blast, and everything else I could think of). For those like me with a REALLY old seal that is REALLY stuck, it may involve an engine hoist and a strap around the dipstick tube. With my hoist attached to the dipstick and nothing else, I lifted the front of the truck up enough that it started to lift on the suspension (half-travel or so) then let it sit. After about two minutes, gravity took its course and the tube came loose with a huge BANG as the truck dropped and the hoist jumped. The dipstick was a bit straighter now and needed a bit of curve before going back in, but no damage was done. I was pretty amazed at how resilient it was!
