Noise while driving from under truck? Any ideas?
Just today noticed a " nails on a chalkboard sound " coming from under truck while driving. That's the best way to describe the sound. Kind of sounds like the noise you would hear from squeaky brakes. Thing is, it only happens after letting off accelerator while coasting and also stops when brakes are applied. It is also intermittent but seemed to get a little worse and more frequent today. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks for any help as always!

Have you had any rear end work done recently, sounds like something is wrong in the rear ring and pinion.

No I have not had anything done. I have noticed in rear diff where driveshaft meets diff, there is some wetness like maybe a seal is leaking. No puddles underneath truck however that I've noticed

Being EMS you know to be careful, but have you tried putting the rear end in the air and see if you can duplicate the noise. Nails on the chalk board is no bueno coming from the rear end.

No I haven't. Don't really feel all that comfortable doing that myself. Could it be caused by low differential fluid? It's not a grinding noise. I might just have to take it to my mechanic and have him check it out

What do I run the risk of driving it like that if that is problem and is where noise is coming from?

When I had a 9 inch going south on me, it made a shreaking, whining, ex-wife complaining noise. You know, the kind that makes you wish it would just quit. I urge you to take it in if you can't do this yourself.

Take it to aamco, they will diagnose it for free, then do the work yourself or take it to your normal shop for repair. It may be something simple like a u joint or something that is more involved like a ring or pinion bearing. good luck! |

Took a pretty good video of the noise with phone this morning. I'll upload soon when I figure out how to attach video

Okay here is a video of the sound while I was driving this morning. You can here it pretty clearly occur when I let off the accelerator and am coasting. There is a bit of wind noise interference, but you can still hear it.
I did just the other day install blue spring upgrade and change fuel filters, so I had air filter out, CAC tube off, and upper radiator hose off. It seems like the noise has become worse since I did these things. May just be a coicidence, not sure if I did something by mistake when doing this. Also, I still can't pinpoint if noise is coming from front or rear, but I think it's coming from rear. What do you all think? Any Ideas? Here is the link: |
