Catalytic converter question

I've been looking for a answer with no luck so my question is: how can you tell if the catalytic converter needs replacing?

if you have a pyrometer your truck will run high egt's. it would be sluggish. how many miles are on it? and what kind of symptoms are you getting?. if it is plugged i would buy a cat delete pipe. unless you have emissions testing of course.

I didn't know they "needed" replacing.

My Samsung SGH-I997 made me send this.

My trucks got under 177k but I had two injectors fall apart and I went ahead and replaced all of them. (My truck was blowing black smoke like a tractor puller when it was just idling.) it still smokes some and has power surges and likes to stall when I'm driving or when I come to a stop after getting off the highway. ( have a new egr valve on the way) I have noticed a lot of build up on my exhaust tip and that makes me wonder about my cat being built up as well.

You need a scanner or gauges to pull codes and read FICM voltage.

Replaced the egr valve and notice the truck already had the egr cooler delete installed. Still have the white smoke and occasional brief power loss ( its like I'm flooring it and then hitting the brakes and then flooring it etc.) gonna check my fuel filters to see if maybe there clogged. There is no fluid mixture in the coolant or oil, I'm stumped.

You need gauges to help diagnose further. But go ahead and pull the cat to see if it helps its two bolts and a clamp. Use some baling wire to hold the exhaust pipe in place and run it around the block a few times to see if that fixes it.

if you don't have emission testing, beat the inside out of it, or put on a delete pipe, you can buy them on e-bay for about $80 bucks. Mine got semi stopd up, and i just beat the guts out of it, and re-installed the factory cat housing. It makes the turbo whistle a lil, and seems to make mine run better. Just a thought, let it breathe.

I was driving to work doing 65 it started shaking and jerking and stalled, luckly I was able to pull over, took a few try's but I got it restarted. Could it be the ebp or icp sensor causes all my problems? I noticed the icp sensor is leaking oil.
