DashBoss monitoring review.

Here's my review for the 6.0 PSD community.

The DashBoss is a monitor solution for the 6.0 PSD when using a iPhone/iTouch/iPad. Sorry Android users, I have no idea when or if you'll get a version, but that shouldn't stop you if you can pick up a used iTouch/iPad. So let's not make this a pissing match on which phone is better!! Thanks!!

UPDATE 2/1/13 Recently (Jan 31 2013) Apple rolled out the newest iOS 6.1 and it appears that they REQUIRE all app submissions to be submitted using the latest SDK or the App is rejected when submitted to the store. What does this mean then?

Basically, the following:
Although Dashboss doesn't care, the iOS requirement makes it incompatible with any device that isn't running at least iOS 4.3
iOS 4.3-6.1 is NOT supported on any device that has older processors (ARMv6) which includes the Gen 1 iPod touch, Gen 2 iPod touch, the original iPhone, and the iPhone 3G
All other devices, from the original iPad, iPod touch models 3rd generation and newer, and iPhones 3GS and newer should work fine.

So when shopping for a 'disposable' refurbed device, be sure to look for something in this list to be sure it's compatible with the proper iOS version required for running Dashboss.

iPhone® with ARMv7 processor which includes:
iPhone® 3GS
Phone® 4
iPhone® 4S
iPhone® 5

iPad® with ARMv7 processor which includes:
iPad®
iPad2®
New iPad® 3rd Gen (Retina display)
iPad Mini®
iPad 4th Gen (Lightning connector)

iPod touch® with ARMv7 processor which includes:
iPod touch® Gen 3
iPod touch® Gen 4
iPod touch® Gen 5

I've had this for almost 2 week, so far i'm very impressed with DashBoss. Not only is it a monitor, but let's you data log and graph out the parameters, Read and clear DTC's, and Run performance test (1/4 mile ect, ect).

DashBoss uses Bluetooth to send the readings to your apple device. You have to use there Gateway OBDII module, and the DashBoss app from iTunes.

As a monitor, you have the option of watching 12 parameters on one screen when in the "Digital View" screen, or you can use the "Dash View" screen and watch 3 sets of 4 parameters. What really impressed me was technically you can watch 24 parameters with just a swipe of the screen. To use 24 parameters, you can set up the 12 in the "Digital View", then in the "Dash View" you can select 12 different parameters (3 sets of 4) which means there are 3 "Dash View" screens that hold 4 parameters each.

Here is a list of parameters that can be used for the 6.0.

EOT, ECT, TFT, VGT%, RPM, IAT1, IAT2, MAF, MAFv, Boost, ICP, ICPv, IPR%, EGR%, Calculated engine load, Absolute Throttle Position, Accelerator Pedal Position, Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure, Vehicle Speed, Injection Pulse Width, Trans Input Shaft Speed, Trans Output Shaft Speed, TCC Speed Ratio, Turbine Speed, Trans Commanded Gear, TC slip, Instant Torque, Instant Power, Instant Economy, Baro psi, Fan Duty Cycle, Fan RPM, Batt volts, FICM main, FICM logic, FICM vehicle, Inject BTDC, FICM/Cam/Crank SYNC, EBPv, EBP psi, ICP Calc Psi for tuned trucks.

Note: only 05-07 read EGR%, EBPv, EBP psi

Then you have the option for adding external sensors for temp and psi, like EGT and Fuel. But I haven't tested these yet.

Now on to the Data Logging.
With a touch of the screen, you can start data logging which ever parameters you have set to watch. After you have data logged and saved the file, you can review the file right on the iPhone/iTouch/iPad, even if your not connected to the truck. When reviewing your data log, it will be in a graph form. At the bottom of the graph is a "Time Line", with a touch of the screen you can see exactly what the parameters are reading at that given time, then slide your finger to read the settings thru-out your logging. You can also send the file to an email, it will show up as a CSV file already organized in columns (see pic down below). This data log feature can help trouble shoot issues.

As far as the DTC's and Performance Test, I haven't had a chance to use these features yet. Give me some time and I'll let you know.

If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.

Here is a short video that I made with some of the features I mentioned. Sorry about the camera, had to use my wife's iPhone 3G. LOL!!

And here is pic of what the emailed CSV file looks like.

How much is the hardware side of it? How would you compare this with the edge insight?

The Gateway Bluetooth module is $170 plus shipping. I'm not sure how it compares to the Edge Insight CS/CTS, I've never owned one,

But sure would be nice for a CS/CTS owner to chime in and see what they think of the DashBoss features and the video I posted, to compare the two.

I forgot to mention, it also has video out which allows you to use a external monitor or a double din screen radio that has inputs.

The video out requires the apple composite cable, I'm not sure if the apple VGA cable will work if using a iPhone4 or iPad, but I can test the VGA cable later on with a PC monitor I have laying around.

All that and you don't have to spend another 160$ on an Accessory system and then another 140$ on the sensor system and another 140$ on the pressure sensor attachment?

Makes a guy wish he never bought into it! :p

Only downside to this would be that Im always shuffling the iPod, that's it.

I haven't added any external ports yet for psi or temp. The DashBoss need to be used with a 0-5v sending unit. After doing a quick search, I found that Autometer #2246 pressure sensor uses 0-5v signal. Summit has this sending unit for $106, then you would either need a wire harness or make your own. The wire harness for the #2246 from summit is $16 part #5227.

Looks VERY cool! I'm assuming that it can only monitor specific PID's that it is programmed for. Does it have a way (like the ScanGauge) where you can customize the PID's? Also, what is the refresh frequency of the 12 PID's? I notice that when using my AE and I have 9 graphs showing, that it will sometimes take a bit between refreshes of the data. Have you noticed anything like that with this setup? The video is very colorful and the graphs are something the Edge Insight doesn't have. Sounds like another cool option for data monitoring/data logging!

You can only monitor the pre-programmed PID's, your not able to tweak them.

I didn't take notice of a delay, but since you mentioned it I'll keep an eye out for it. Once I read your post, I remembered a related post on the DashBoss forum with the same issue.

Hey Shawn, I can find out from the DashBoss team on what the refresh rate is when data logging 12 PID'S.

Here's a short video, I'm running 12 PID's and you can see how the DashBoss reacts when compared to the OEM factory gauge (RPM).

No problem, if you have issues, you can contact Ken. Either thru his email or the DashBoss forum. His customer service is just like Vivian's at Quicktricks!!

I really think this set-up will give another option for monitoring the motor with the 6.0 PSD. Next month I'm gonna buy the hardware needed for the external ports for temp and psi. Ill just swap out my analog EGT probe in the exhaust manifold (also have a bung in the down pipe), and for psi i'll buy a fuel filter cap and compare readings to my analog gauge that's in the test port.

Thanks, Rich. That looks about what I would expect and is probably darn near what my Insight is like. I wonder if it's just the CAN protocol that seems to cause the issue or if it's AutoEnginuity... :dunno:

Hey Shawn, I did contact the DashBoss team with your question. Here is a copy/past with the question I asked and their reply.

I do have a question that was asked on the one forum. When data logging, how fast is the refresh rate when logging 12 PID's at once? I know with the AE you can log 9 PID's, but with all 9 PID's recording the logging rate can get slowed down.

The data rate is higher than the DashHawk was and depending on your iOS device (the dual processor iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are slightly faster) you'll get somewhere around a group of all 12 parameters (plus some 'ghost ones' that aren't displayed directly but are used for calculations and status) at about 10-15 "frames" a second.

NICE! Sounds like it would keep up quite well for my needs...

NOW, when are they gonna release the Android version? :poke :D

With DashBoss, you have to buy their Bluetooth Gateway module. The module holds the Firmware to work with the app.

Not only do they update the app in iTunes, they also update the Gateway module for newer or more vehicles. The Gateway firmware is where it reads your VIN to bring up the parameters when you first connect to the truck. So you'll be able to use this on multiple vehicles.

This might be a silly question but how does this sit with all the new distracted driver laws popping up lately?
Police are watching for cell phone use......could this or any other cell phone monitor be considered "cell phone use"?

#23 ·
I would think that they might as well pull over people who have GPS, Sirius radio, Edge Insights, ect, ect. All these can be considered a distraction.

Your not driving around with the phone to your ear. Heck, having two small children in the back seat arguing is very distracting. WILL YOU STOP TOUCHING ME!!!! I'M TELLING DAD!!! LOL!!!!

I wish this was out a year ago. Much better option than the insight CS that I am running now (cheaper and better screen). I already had my iphone mounted in the truck. If my CS keeps acting up (auto shutdown problem), I may ditch it and go with the dash boss. I am already using the autometer sender and wiring harness in the CS. I would just have to make sure the EGT sender is 0-5V.

I have a question for you Canada members.

The DashBoss team is thinking about getting rid of the decimal value in the Fahrenheit PID's, it's really not needed.

But for you member up north that use celsius, would you want or need to have the decimal value in the temperature readings?

Thanks, Rich

Any members want to comment ^^^^^^^^^

Here is an example: some of the temp readings are showing a decimal reading of 191.4* in fahrenheit. The preferred reading would be just 191* with out the decimal.

What would you northern neighbors prefer, with or without the decimal?

Have you tested the accuracy vs Auto Ingenuity or a snap-on scanner or something like that? It seems sometimes the Torque app has accuracy issues where corrected values have to be put in the formula's. I think this is the way of the future over self contained monitoring systems.

#31 ·
I used AE to confirm the temps, boost, volts, and MAP, MAF, IAT, IAT2, ICP, IPR, VGT readings.

I still have to check and confirm the trans readings, APP, and IPW.

This looks really good, think I would have considered this route over my Cts.
now I don't know if it's just mine but my Cts gets lost if I get on it hard, when in the 8 digital gauge view all readings blank for a couple of seconds then right back on (yes currant update). Is this something you seen on the dashboss? We all know you like to stand on the skinny pedal seen the vids LOL

LOL!! That video can be incriminating!!!

I have not experienced blank readings, I just got done playing with the 1/8 and 1/4 mile runs without issues, well the only issue was the crappy times from spinning the duals.

After using the 1/8 and 1/4 runs, you not only get a time slip, but your able to look at the graph of the 4 selected parameters that were displayed on that screen.

You might want to contact Edge about your issue, or post up a thread for other Edge users to help resolve the blank readings.

Thanks, Rich. I have an iPhone 3Gs from work and am eligible for an upgrade. I'm holding out because my personal phone is an Android and that's where I load up all my apps, so there's no real reason to upgrade yet... Maybe there is now! :D

This looks like a great app. and with some real thought out features. The thing that always confused me about my SCT was the battery voltage had no decimals but the EGT went to .oo1. Do you know if a sct egt probe will work?

Can 6 readings be displayed instead of 12, just thinking that the numbers get pretty small with 12?

#38 · (Edited)
I'm not sure about the SCT EGT probe, I haven't gotten that far with testing out the external ports. I do know that the probe or sending unit must be a 0-5v to work with the DashBoss. I have been informed that one of the beta testers has a working EGT/external port hooked up to his cummins.

You can't reduce the amount of PID's on the screen. I can ask them if it's possible to have an optional 6 PID's on screen instead of 12.

Edit:: meant to say can't.

Baro and Batt volts were added!! Next week I'm gonna be ordering a EGT probe and possibly a Fuel psi sensor to hook up the external ports and test. I'll keep you all posted.

I've been informed, this beta version will be released to iTunes shortly!! Just doing some tweaking to video out.

I made my own mount, don't like the suction cup iOS holders.

I used 1/8 Lexan, cut to shape, used heat gun to bend, then Velcro to dash.

I'll be ordering the external port sensors next weekend. I'm gonna have to test them out for accuracy. I'll be adding EGT and Fuel psi to the DashBoss, estimated cost of the external add ons $110!!!

If these external parts work well with the DashBoss, total cost--- DashBoss ($170), K-type EGT probe ($53), K-type adapter/converter 0-5v ($20), Fuel psi sensor 0-5v ($30), wire/plugs ($10). Total cost of monitor system for 6.0 $283 not including the cost of iOS device.

Will keep you posted

Update:

I ordered the parts needed for the external ports to monitor EGT and Fuel psi, should have them in hand by the following weekend.

I will keep you all posted with my results.

I have been informed that DashBoss has submitted the newest app version (1.3) to iTunes. Once approved, the Ford PID's will be available to the public.
