Worth buying? 05 F250 4x4 4 door Lariat 250k
Im new to the diesel world, but I have always wanted an F250 Diesel....one because they look awesome, but mainly for the pulling power and stability when towing a bigger trailer. I have a Nissan Titan, and it is lacking a bit when it comes to both of those traits while towing.
Someone at my work has an 05 F250 Lariat 4x4 4 door with 250k miles and the oil cooler needs replacing. They are asking $11,500 which is payoff on their loan. Cosmetically, the truck is about 8/10....esp for the mileage. I was wondering if this truck is worth buying and repairing, and if so, will it be reliable, or do I need to have studs put in and all that good stuff while its in the shop? Thanks |

for a little more you can get one with alot less miles I would not thats alot for a truck with 250,000 on it. Look around I did and have a 2005 crew fx4 with 90 k and got it for 20,000

Yeah, Im going back and forth about it. I was just thinking that Id be getting in it at a good bit cheaper than NADA value on it, and most of the time its sorta hard to do that.

If his oil cooler is clogged, then his EGR cooler might be burned out as well and if this is the case, there might be some head gasket damage. I would take the VIN to a Ford dealer and see what's been done to the truck. Either A), all maintenance/issues have been dealt with appropriately and there's no long term problems; or B) He's hiding something (such as the EGR or HG's being bad). I understand that he wants/owes $11,500 but unless you replace the oil cooler yourself, you're looking at sticking at least $1000 into it to fix the oil cooler, probably more. Tell him there's reason to believe there might be issues with the EGR cooler and that this concerns you and see if he'll let it go for $9,000. Heck, even if the heads were shot, you would still come out ahead at $9,000. I bought my 05 in 2008 with 73,000 miles for $21,000 but it's a rarity when I see them going for that low nowadays. I personnaly think you can polish this into a good deal. My $.02
