Aftermarket oil filter housing?

I just performed a partial oil change on the new F-350. When I took the oil filter housing off, and pulled the old oil filter, I noticed it did not have the 4 plastic tabs at the top that the Motorcraft replacement I bought had. The Motorcraft filter would not fit into the plastic/housing or cap. The cap had a Carquest part # which makes me think it was aftermarket. The filter just had rubber round seats top and bottom. I put the old filter and cap back on for the time being and filled it with Rotella T-6.

What kind of oil filter housing do I need? Did they come with two different ones or do I need to get the proper Ford cap back on? I would prefer to run the Motorcraft parts, so can I just the cap at the parts counter, or is it special?

Are all the 6.0 filter housings designed to take the 4 tab oil filter? I agree with your sentiment and will. I just wanted to verify it "was broke" before I fix it. Thanks.

Aftermarket market filters can and will break. Ford has a patent on the filters. Aftermarkets will differ in some way.

You might have a different cap than stock. Someone may have gotten a different cap and filter one time. Or, look real close inside the cap. Some filters came with a "fill the gap" piece that was placed inside the cap to make the wrong filter fit. As you can see in the picture on the video posted above. The filler part could have the 4 tabs.
