egr valve question

i have a 2006 with a 102000 miles the other night i went to leave and the truck started just fine but as soon as i went to accelerate the check eng light came on and it lost power and was smoking, so i pulled the codes and they were all egr related so i pulled the egr valve out and it was stuck wide open with carbon buildup so i cleaned it up put it back in and no more problems.is this normal,is it just another reason to delete it?thanks

102k miles, and it's the first time being cleaned? Not bad!! It's usually a good idea to pull the valve out once a year for cleaning.

Yhea, another reason to delete.

I pulled mine at 20K miles and it was almost plugged with soot. Bought a rebuilt spare on eBay and some gaslet kits so I can swap it out and then clean offline later. Pulled it at 30K miles and it looked OK, so I think I will pull and clean every 20K or so.
