How long is too long for crank times
I have been reading up on long cranking times and I think my 6.0 is cranking abnormally long for a diesel but I have never had an electronically controlled diesel before. My previous experiences are Duetz engines in our tractors and irrigation pumps and a 1981 Luv pickup, all mechanical stuff.
I wait for the ready to start light to go out and then a few more seconds, maybe 4 or 5, and then it takes about 2-4 seconds of cranking to light off. The engine spins fine not slow or anything like that I just don't know if that crank time is long or are we talking about 10-20 seconds of crank time as excessive? Thanks Dik |

I wonder about my crank time also. Not sure what a long crank is for a 6.0 either. mine takes about 2-3 seconds to fire up also.

it depends on the tune for me. if i run my dd tune (spartan hybrid race) it might turn over twice and it starts.

What about your other tunes??

I had problems with my truck starting. Thought it might be injectors, or the injector pumps. Nothing too bad 5-7 second start times. Then one day it took 3 - 20 second cranks before it finlly fired up. Ended up being the stand pipe needed to be replaced.

Hey man... I had the same concerns. I did a youtube search to see how my truck's startup compared with the 30+ others on youtube and discovered mine was no different. Now if yours is having some starting issues, there's a few things that can be wrong like FICM. But do the youtube thing to see how yours compares and go from there.

Mine sometimes starts at first turn of the key and other times it might take 2 or 3 seconds but never more than about 3 seconds. It has done this as long as I have had it, 6 years.

my diesel tech told me anything between 3 to 6 mississippi seconds is normal.

I guess it is pretty normal then. 6 seconds is really a long time to me as far as cranking a vehicle. I will actually count the mississippis the next time I start er up and I will post up the results.
Thanks for the input Dik |
