Alternator
Before owning my Excursion, I owned a Suburban that went through an alternator about once a year. Luckily I had a lifetime warranty, but it was still a hassle. Fast forward to my Excursion and I just replaced my alternator this morning which is now the third one. Again, I have the lifetime warranty, but it's a pain. This last one lasted two years, but I'm looking for better.
I searched but either answers are limited, or all over the place. I would like to upgrade my alternator to one that will last, and maybe put out a little more amperage, say in the 140-160 range. I don't want a smaller pulley to where I am changing the belt as well. I just want a quality built unit that will last more than a couple years. I don't want to find myself on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere with the family on vacation, towing a trailer trying to swap alternators. This is what happened with alternator number two. I plan to get my Edge Insight CTS soon to be able to monitor this, but currently don't own one. RECOMMENDATIONS???? |

Diesel Power seems to think highly of them, they have a good selection too. I've seen dozens of posts on the Explorer Forum (own a '97) about then with good reviews and results. I remember maybe one or two people who got one that it didn't live up to their expectation, however they had tons of lights, and rock gear drawing on them.

Take it to a local shop, have them re-wind it to the specifications you want.

I called DCPower and the gentleman said that their pulley is smaller, but because the case is larger it requires spacers and negates the need for a different, ie. smaller belt. |
