Noise from front driver side/questions from mechanically challenged

Reposted this from the drivetrain forum. I've noticed people dont really browse through there like this forum, and I need to get on this before I get stuck somewhere! Sorry in advance:


Took my truck out camping over the weekend and went over a couple of bumps (some perhaps a little fast...) and since I've brought her home I've noticed a thunking sound coming from under the driver side front feels like right under the foot pedals. This occurs when hitting rough spots on the road and bouncing around.
Now to note, I have no experience diagnosing/replacing things like tie rods or wheel hubs. It's sad but I bought this truck to learn everything I've been ignorant towards mechanically. Being said, I want to make sure everything is in working order as I will probably have to throw her on some axle stands and get under. Can I get some tips and how-to's to make sure I get a good look at all the essentials while I'm down under? Thanks folks!

Check you sway bar bushing first. The bushing and drop links wear out, and will cause the exact noise your describing.
