First road trip
So, my wife and I took our 2003 F350 on our first road trip to test it out. We drove from Beaverton Oregon, over the mountains to central Oregon on Friday night after work to go look at a camper. Total on this leg was 4 hours, one of which was stop and go bumper to bumper just to get out of town. 194 miles, 10.9 gal. at 18.1 mpg.
The next morning we headed up to Northern Idaho to visit for the weekend. We went 360 miles, 18.9gal. and got 19.0. This was for the most part all freeway driving, in Oregon had the CC set at 68ish and then in Washington at about 74. I am feeling pretty good about these numbers. Truck was unloaded, just the wife, the dog and me with all of our gear. The drive home was into some pretty severe head winds coming thru the Columbia Gorge, and that dropped my milage to 17.6mpg for that leg of the journey. So, we went a total of 1129 miles on 54.7 gallons for an overall average of 20.6mpg. This is an all stock truck with no mods. |

Sorry, 2003 F350 CC LB 4x4 SRW truck....

Thats close to what I was getting with stock tires and tune. I cant seem to get any better no matter what tune I use. 315s made my mileage drop about a ton.

It's obvious to me you aren't giving it enough throttle.

I have 315/75/16's and i cant get above 15mpg. Im probably gonna do something a little different when I need new tires.

Yeah, the tires I have on it are 265/85/R16 and they are really worn out. I am going to put 285/75/R16s on it. I just can't make up my mind about which tire to get. The Toyo M55, Toyo M/T or the BFG A/T KO....

That sounds like pretty ideal MPG's.
The Bumper to bumper doesn't help getting out of Beaverton. Which pass did you take over to Central Ore.? I came out of Maupin area to The Dalles late last fall with my camp trailer and fought that Gorge wind all the way to town. Didn't even think about checking MPG's. And since you came home empty, the camper must not have impressed you. Sean |

I'm jealous of your MPG. I have 2004 F350 CC LB 4x4 DRW and don't get close to those numbers. And, I'm stock. Maybe cause I have a different differential gear set. But then again, I didn't buy the truck for MPG.

We went over Mt. Hood on highway 26. Once we got past all of the traffic heading up to Vancouver we were able to get up to speed. The pass was clear when we came thru, but they had another 3 inches of snow at Government Camp over night.
The camper was actually pretty nice, but we are wanting to look around some more. There are a lot of them for sale right now. The camper we looked at was a '99 S&S 11'. It has a generator and solar panels and is set up really nice. We shall see.... But, like I said I am very pleased so far with this truck! Andrew |
