'06 F-350 with 80K Miles

I need to upgrade my F-150 to allow my wife and I to tow a 5th wheel travel trailer. We have the opportunity to buy a traded-in '06 F-350 PSD 4X4 LB SRW Lariat from a local ford dealer, but it has 80K miles on it already - The truck is in great cosmetic condition, engine runs nicely w/good engine response and no smoke; the auto transmission works well also.

I just get an uneasy feeling when I see a fairly late model truck with the mileage equivalent of crossing the continental United States 27 times! The price is right and my neighbor says that at that mileage the 6.0L PSD is just starting to feel its oats.

Is my neighbor right? If I buy it, what should I do to lower the risk of engine or transmission problems going forward?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

I would get an OASIS report done on it. It will tell you what kind of work has been done by ford to the truck. You can get those by becoming a premium member of the site

ditto on the OASIS, it will tell yo ueverytime it has been to a ford service shop. some of the early 6.0's had alot of EGR, Turbo related issues, i myself have had 3 turbos put on mine under factory warranty, but i still love the truck. if the OASIS comes back good, and your comfortable with the miles, cost then go for it. if you still get the uneasy feeling even after the oasis, mybe you should look for another deal. they are out there, private party usually gets you a better deal rather than going to a dealer. good luck, hope you find what you are looking for!

If its a one owner trade in, you can ask the dealer for the previous owner's contact info and ask them any questions you may have as well. With a truck less than 2 years old with that many miles I'm sure it was used for towing on a lot of long trips, probably a real good explanation. If that would be the case I wouldn't hesitate to buy one with 80k on it, the best thing for these trucks is to use them like they were intended to be used. Also definately have an oasis report run to see if any warranty work has been performed. Good luck.

if you're towing a fifth wheel, the ONLY way to go is with a dually. The stability when towing is really noticeable with a dually.Maybe this is why the SRW truck is bein traded in!! remember the F350 will get about 15mpg with 4.11's on stock tires..less when towing.....quite a bit less than the F150
