auto and locking hubs

On my 05 I have auto 4x4 but can also lock in the hubs manualy. So right now I have the hubs in the free position and just use the auto 4x4. I am trying to figure out why and when you would ever need to lock in the hubs. Ive never had a 4x4 truck where they had both options

It gives you the ability, if you lose vacuum to the hub, to manually lock them in. My '95 ram don't have that option, so when my vacuum line cracked, I was unable to put it in 4X4.
