Egr throws a light only when towing uphill??????

So my buddies has an 04 and when he's tows up a grade the power is cut down like hitting a rev limiter and it throws a code for the egr valve. he can tow for 200 miles flat ground with no problems, as soon as the truck climbs it hits. He tows a car trailer with a 4x4 rock crawler on it.

stop towing uphill and light goes away and truck runs fine months at a time with no light. Tried cleaning the Egr valve to no avail.

thoughts????????????????

Well the motor is trying to save itself, it is defueling or going into a limp mod.
I would get a set a gauges on to see what the difference in EOT-ECT are max 15* but i think 10* your cooler are getting plugged. Has the coolant been flushed running the Ford Gold Cxxp, the turbo also may need to be cleaned the unison ring may be frozen does he run any centane boost in the fuel to keep the EGR valve and turbo clean
