who is good with electrical?

I went to hook up the car hauler last night and the check trailer light kept flickering across my message center. I looked back at the trailer as I was going down the road and noticed my side lights flickering as well. Im not to familiar with how the electrical works on the trailers and the trucks with tow command. I believe my ground either isnt working on the trailer or the truck. I was told that ball should not ground the trailer. I think that is what is happening because when I have the hookup connected to my truck and the ball disconnected from the tongue none of the lights work. Does anyone know how to check the ground on the trailer and on the truck?
