Why cant i just cut muffler and cats out on exhaust?
Hey guys i'm new to diesels so this might be a dumb question. I bought a custom sct tune and now looking to upgrading exhaust.
Instead of spending money on straight pipe 4"exhaust why can't I just cut off the cats and muffler off my stock exhaust??? I know its only 3.5" but only having a tune I dont see it making a huge difference besides on my wallet as I only pull a 8000lb boat every now and then during the summer??? Will it sound different? or should i just cut cats off or muffler or both?? Thanks |

You'll hear the turbo spool a lot better. Try it, and if you don't like it, buy a 4" Straight Pipe System.

that's how much truck is done. sounds good.
i didn't see a reason to upgrade to 4" for a few hundred, and 5" is worthless unless you have enough HP |

would you keep the muffler?

thats what we did to our f450 dump truck. the cab and chassis exhaust is alot more expensive than exhaust for a non-cab and chassis so i bought the cat delete pipe which was about 60 something then we cut the muffer out. sounds just like my truck yet i spent a couple hundred vs 60 something for the cat delete and whatever you use to replace muffler. i just put a 90 on it and dumped it in front of the back tire

It's not that much louder without it.

not to piss in your cereal but no emission testing dont mean you can just cut crap off
do you (know) someone that can inspect it. technicly to pass you must have a cat and muffler on . if you know someone then by all means cut away |

Welcome to the .org
Heck yea she'll sound different. Crash course real quick about what to expect. One is your EGTs will benefit from less restriction especially since you're towing. There are also three different turbo designs in regards to the exhaust turbine. '03 10 blades which whistle like a turbine jet engine and well since right off the top of my head I can't remember the next count for the specific years they maxed out in '07 with 17 if I remember right which in short the more exhaust blades the quieter the whistle and more "hair drier" sound you'll get but they still sound awesome irregardless Look around on the site some and you'll find this place to be a very helpful encyclopedia for the PSD. |
