I found a 2004 6.0 with 135k and had the reman engine installed at 66k(Im trying to get records). IF its a rebuilt engine, will the head bolts be updated or will that still be an issue? Also I plan on keeping it stock, maybe exhaust if any mods, the only towing Ill be doing is the occasional boat from western colorado to lake powell, some decent hills, but high heat. If I do an egr delete kit would this be a good candidate for a 250,000 truck? Ive heard to many stories from both sides.

EGR delete is a great step, and i would recommend a quality Digital Gauge (Edge Insight) to be able to moniter the ECT(coolant temp) and EOT(engine oil temp) to monitor the condition of the oil cooler. Throw in a coolant filter and Flush the ford gold coolant, and you should be set, as well as proper maintainence.

Replace with what antifreeze? Or just new ford gold?
Also as far as regular maintenance goes, is that a fuel filter every 6k, and a coolant filter once I add that? |

There are no such thing as an updated head bolt or at least that's what I've been told. Delete the EGR or put an EGR in from BPD, put some studs in, change out the gold coolant and replace with some ELC, get a coolant bypass kit, and an oil bypass kit and you'll have a pretty reliable truck...
Also get some gauges. I recommend an Edge Insight. For the cost it's almost the same price as analog gauges, but with the Insight you can monitor more like ECT and EOT... |

I was hoping to keep the head studs to "fix as fail". If I do every thing else will that reduce the chances of the head gaskets going, or is it still a crap shoot?

Still a crap shoot. There are tuned trucks running factory head bolts without any issues, and then there are bone stock trucks that have blown the headgaskets.

Ill finally be able to look at it on Friday, Im hoping like hell when it was rebuilt they went ahead and studded it, if so I think Ill be driving it home. What are some normal ECT and EOT?
