2003: What makes that whistle?
Love my 2003 6.0L, nothing like the sound of that turbo. But im curious and want to know, what is it exactly about that turbo that creates that easily recognizable sweet sweet whistle? Is it the vanes or number of vanes, is it the turbine/compressor wheel (or the particular number of fins on the wheel) or is it some combination of the two? Also, is that whistle able to be re-created on a different / aftermarket turbo by doing some kind of modification?
Appriciate any insight...thanks! |

not positive but i think that it has something to do with the vanes and/or number of vanes.

That's right, the number of vanes on the exhaust side makes it whistle more. An 03 turbo has 10, it'll look like this...

There is also no silencer ring.

The vanes cutting the air. All turbos make that noise, even from my rice rockets. But the number of vanes (less in the 03) make a difference in the pitch.

My neighbors are happy I dont have an 03! My 06 stright pipe can still be heard 3 houses down once high idle hits in the am. lol

I believe what you are pointing to is the compressor wheel fins which in the 03 has 10 fins. The vanes are undeneath the unison ring and are shaped like little teardrops. Correct me if I am wrong. |

My 03 is straight piped and screams. It's probably too loud. I try to keep it quiet when driving by cops. |

I have an 04.....pretty sure they have more vanes then the 05-07 trucks...mine sounds like a freaking fighter jet in the mornings at high idle
