Fuel gauge help

So I filled up today and when I turned the truck on the fuel low indicator light came on. I was thinking that maybe while I drove the rest of the way home the indicator would start to work but still nothing. It isn't moving to full, it has moved up just past the low indicator light to turn off but thats it. Anyone know what can cause this or how I can fix it or is it just a bad sender and now have to drop the tank?

Did you happen to have the key in the on or accessory position?

so filling up with the key in the on position can fry the sending unit?

is there a way to reset this without pulling the unit out?
