First Real Haul - Temps

I made several trips hauling cattle to the market yesterday. Averaged about 12k lbs a trip, 80 mile round trip. This is the first real load I've put on my 6.0. I used the tow tune from IDP. The truck did real well, but my concern is my temps. I see the chart for temps and I had a few in the "Severe Service" level.

My ECT=208, EOT=220, EGT=980. These are all cruising at 55-60 numbers. Are these ok for cruising for longer periods? I plan on taking a 7 hr trip with my 10k lb 5th wheel in a couple weeks and hope i have an uneventful trip.

I'm completely stock except for the list in my sig.

Thanks,
Marshall

Where you running a tune while you were towing? Also, what were your peak numbers when you were pulling a grade?

I see those numbers while I am towing my 12k lb toy hauler as well, so that doesn't concern me. Those numbers are within specifications although your temperature delta is about 12* which is something you should keep an eye on.

Yes, I was using a tow tune from IDP. Not much grade here in florida.

Those coolant/oil numbers were pretty much peak. Never really got any higher and might have dropped a few degrees as speed fell off. My EGTs would get up 1100-1200 starting off.

Yeah, temp delta has been creeping apart, but then they'll go back to around 6-8 degs. I plan to change the oil cooler and remove the EGR cooler around the first of the year so I hope it holds out. My main concern is pulling my 5th for 7 hours. I'm changing oil from 15w-40 to 5w-40(Rotella T6) before I trek north.
I'll see if that changes anything...

Since those are somewhat peak numbers, I wouldn't be worried at all. I see those temps all the time and I run my truck and trailer for several hours at a time as well. My trip this week will be for about 5 hours heading down near the California state line for some R&R at the sand dunes...

I took my 5th wheel for a cruise this weekend and my temps were about the same, about a 12* delta. I'm heading on a 7-8 hr trip on Thursday. Hoping that temp difference doesn't increase..

hey i pull a 38 foot fifth wheel 14,000lbs(its a big camper). When i cruise 70 i see 1,000-1,100 degrees egt constantly. This is on the stock tune. I've pulled for 4 hours with it straight at this speed. My dad has pulled this same load for 10 hours straight at these speeds with the same truck.

I was hoping my numbers wouldn't create an issue. At 60 mph, my ECT=206 and EOT=218 and EGTs stay at 980. Of course any grade or increase in load/speed, those numbers go up proportionately. At what point is it REALLY an issue? I guess it's truck dependent. I'm more worried about an EGR cooler rupture at this point. Especially being 500 miles from home...

Thanks for the info..
