Emissions requirement for Diesels?

I watched a strange site today in front of my work. The San Diego Police set up a mobile emissions test on a fairly busy road. They were stopping everyone and inspecting random cars/trucks and putting them on a smog test machine. A couple of people got cited for not having approved CARB (California Air Resource Board) emissions performance modifications like exhausts or intakes. Anyone know if our Diesels are exempt from emissions tests? I do know removing the kitty is a problem but not sure about anything else.

well dont know if your here in cali with us but its really iffy out here... my 7.3 didnt come with a CAT so i dont have to worry about that... and i never have to pass smog although they are trying to pass a law to make diesels (older models) pass smog.... i always get scared about getting stopped and checked even though im completely legit i just dont want to be messed with

Yes, this is in San Diego, California. I was really suprised to see this and they made traffic back up a looonnng way.

Im up in idaho I had a cop pull me over to inform me he thought somthing was wrong with my truck because it was blowing black smoke out the tail pipe! <plays stupid> and then he let me go sucks to be in cali

I live in Ohio and I just registered my truck as 14,000GVR and I never need an E check, or have to follow any emisssion laws, and it was only 20 dollars more.

As it is right now there is no smog testing for diesels in ca. YET.
There is a bill in the senate right now that is trying to have one put in place. The problem is there is no standards to go by or equipment to properly test the diesel emmissions. So they will require a test to get info only and charge you $25.00 to do it.
