SCREECHING turbo!
Unrelated to my post about updating my pcm. The issue has been around for a bit and really it might not even be the turbo itself. Only on start up does it make this loud screeching noise. It almost goes as follows: start truck, normal sounds and idle with no turbo whistle, 1-2 seconds later it will screech, a little whistle, some more screeching, then full whistle(normal turbo sound for 5 inch straight pipe. Doesnt do it anymore until next time truck is started. It is not a normal turbo sound. I searched and found some ideas to look at but all involved trucks that were under a load. Thanks.

What year truck and turbo? Some of the early turbos had problems with oil feed lines. You might want to start looking there. Sounds like you have no oil on startup to feed the turbo.

Its a 2005 with 124K. I hope it ends up being nothing but I bet thats not the case.

First thing I would try is, pull the air inlet tube off the front of the turbo and give the turbine a spin... See how it feels.

No update. Haven't got a chance to mess with the truck. Hopefully I'll get some free time on my next day off. I did notice its more intermittent if the truck has been outside overnight and its cold out. Again though, its only during start up.

My truck started to do the same thing you stated. Upon start up it will make the normal engine exhaust noise and then it would sound like a screaming bottle rocket when the turbo would kick in-only for a split second then it would go to the normal exhaust whistle-mine would hardly make the normal turbo whistle with aftermarket turbo back exhaust. Ford dealer fought me for 3 days, they said the turbo was good because it would still spool and there were no codes stored. I said the turbo also is a mechanical part that has a bearing it. The tech removed the turbo and finally inspected it-They called me today and said a new turbo will be here monday. I will let you know how it sounds when I get it back. I am still under powertrain warranty until the end of next month. They did not give me any grief for having upgraded exhaust or an intake on it.
