EGR Disconnect?

Well I think I’m going to disconnect my EGR just to see what happens. Why? Aw heck I don’t know, I guess because it’s on the truck, therefore I must tinker with it. I’ve read a ton of information on this. Some people claim an increase in throttle response and better fuel mileage - others claim that they noticed nothing at all. Some people were experiencing problems such as surging and the problems were gone after disconnecting it. I have NO problems, my rig is friggin AWESOME but I’m just curious what it’ll do and heck since it can’t hurt anything I figured why not give it a shot.
Anyone have any thoughts on the whole EGR debate?

Did you ever disconnect your EGR valve I'm assuming? Good luck with the weather by the way.

Never done it, but keep us posted on the results. If it works for ya, let us know how to go about disconnecting it.

I disconnected mine and it idles fine. We'll find out on the ride to work how it reacts to full load.

Hey sorry guys - this place has been a mad house but I'm finally getting back to normal.
I didn't get a chance to disconnect mine. I'll do it this weekend though and add my report to Scotty's.

With the EGR unplugged my rig seemed to pull harder once you get into the power but it could just be in my mind. I think I might have to get a part time job at a speed shop so I can get some dyno time. I plugged it back in and put my stock air intake under the hood and it's nice to not see my engine light now.

It could possably cause detonation/combustion knocking---Possable engine damage can occur on gasoline engines

I don't see how it could cause detonation since all it does is put useless gasses back into the combustion chamber??

Not to sound rude, but diesels pretty much run on detonation.

Detonation or "pinging" is caused by the fuel/air vapor igniting durring the compression stroke

On Gasoline engines, the EGR valve is meant to open if the engine is spinnibg faster then the throttle is open, or when coasting and you foot is off the pedal. on gas engines this saves fuel by reducing the reference vaccum after the throttle valve thus pulling less fuel, when it isn't needed.

Since diesels are throttled on fuel and not air, this is kind of a mute point. As far as it's purpose on the 6.0 PSD i belive it may be used to help warm the engine and also to serve as a substitute waste gate. but i haven't done the research on it yet.

From what I understand the EGR is for polution control only. I have a poor memory but I believe nitrogen and O2 bond together during the end of the combustion cycle (when under high load) forming NOx . This NOx is bad for the enviroment so to reduce this they recirulated exhaust gases (mostly carbon monoxide and water) to cool the combustion. This is supposed to cool the combustion chamber to reduce the formation of NOx. And I was wrong once again. The increase in heat with out the EGR valve could cause detonation on a gas engine. I'm not sure with the PSD especially with an intercooler and what James said above.
