I bought a used (70K) OEM Motorcraft 6.4 starter from a local salvage yard and had a local auto electric shop rehab it and replace the solenoid. I ended up with about $120 in it total. Not sure how that compares to new aftermarket, but I thought that was a good price for what I got.
When my starter went, I got a 6.0 starter from the Ford dealer. Believe it was around $400. Kind of wish I'd gone with the 6.4 starter, but circumstances prevented it.
I was on a trip without good internet access or a delivery address and needed one right away. Because it was an AutoZone starter I installed that went bad and stranded me in the hotel parking lot, I wanted Ford OEM installed, so I drove to the local dealer. Lost a day on that trip.
I already went ahead and did the rite thing . I ordered a Motorcraft 6.7 starter . Probably could have found a good used one on EBAY
but I already spent many thousands on all new Ford parts when I did my motor ( except for my KC stage 2 ) , soooooooooooo why
skimp now .
Thanks for your input guys , I can't wait to install this along with my new Leece 230 alternator . I'm sure it will be an electrifying experience - LOL !
