Hey all, forgive me if this is repeated question. What is everyone's thoughts on purchasing an 06 with 205,XXX that is "Ford service since new. Extensive service records. 6.0 PowerStroke Diesel. All stock"?
I think I've talked myself into going with a 6.0 on my next purchase, and specifically the 05-07 models for the engine improvements and the better ride quality/creature habits. I have found several "bulletproofed" around on the local classifieds, but this one caught my eye because of the Ford Service since new, and extensive service records. Should I give it a look, or keep hunting for a "bulletproofed" truck.
Any opinions welcome. I've been a lurker for a while, been on the fence about getting back to the diesel market. Had given thought to the 2.8 Dmax in the Colorado/Canyon, but I don't want to spend the jack on a brand new truck, when I can drop 10- 15k on a decent 6.0 with 150k+ on the clock, and legitimately expect to get another 200-300k out of it if I take care of it.
after buying my 6.0 and haring all the horror stories etc etc
I was nervous at first then after finding this forum learning what to do with it and what not i LOVE my truck and wouldn't hesitate to buy another :thumb:
they come with issues from the factory but they are easy to fix and damn stout when done right.
I think with all the "bullet proof" talk and differing ideas as to what that means i would rather go with a stock truck and do it my self right the first time
of course if yohu find the right guy selling a properly done truck...
but then there is all the questioning what they did how honest they and or their machanic were...
you get the idea
So, you're saying you'd rather get a stock 6.0 and then do the upgrades/have your mechanic do them rather than buying one already done unless you trust the person? So, with that...if I picked this one up, I'd immediately have to start a "bulletproof" fund, so the work can be done at some point. I think I read ~2500 in parts, and another ~2500 in labor costs if I pay someone to do it. Is that still an accurate number?
look at the records. if you can prove any of the "bulletprofed" trucks have ARP head Studs already done and or Bullet Proof Diesel Remote il Cooler.. go for that if the money/ maintenance/ condition is right. the cost for a stock truck them to bulletproof can get pricy.
true I am jut saying there are people out there that change an oil cooler to an inferior "blue one", and claim "bulletproof"
so get receipts for anything anyone is claiming as bulletproofing
just so we are clear.
someone CALLING a part an improvement over stock doesn't make it so
sad but true...
BPD is the only company I know of that not only makes a superior product but stands behind it like anyone who believes in their products should.
the blue company that shall remain nameless is the antithesis of this :look:
even ford does this to an extent I have heard of far more failures with the "improved" egr cooler than the original 03 style
that said...
if i were to buy a new to me truck I would get a 6.0 and go though it
1) install a good monitor possibly the torque plus (not that i do not LOVE the cts i have in my truck) but to learn a different system and be of better use for the increased knowledge.
then depending on budget.
2) flush the coolant several times until i am certain nothing remains but clear water (I would also do the cascade flush as it truly does an astounding job of removing gunk and scale.
fill with elc coolant
3) relocate a new oem oil cooler AT MINIMUM if not go straight to the BPD remote air to oil cooler again,
4) block off delete murderate and othewise destroy the egr cooler. or at very least BPD egr cooler if i HAD to keep one.
5) set aside the cash to have it studded new oringed heads (over kill but...)
check and deck the heads and block push rods stc upgrade if applicable improved hpop is if applicable all year dependent...
change ALL fluids
get a good 5-40synthetic in there for oil and i swear by archoil...
not always a fan of additives but the stuff flat out works :thumb: testing has proven it and my own truck has shown me that it is MUCH happier with it then without it.
Mitch RIP helped me out when i first got my truck and started my build.
here is a pretty good rant on the 6.0 http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-...s-consider-about-owning-6-0l.html#post2147484
