Remove exhaust mandifolds during egr delete?

I have been searching a bunch of threads I might have missed it but didnt see any info on this. I am getting ready to do an egr delete on my 04. I am going to be welding a plug in the stock up pipe. Just wondering if the exhaust manifolds have to be removed to get the stock up pipe out to be welded? has anyone welded it still installed in the engine bay?

I just cut the end off of the EGR cooler and welded a plug into that, then clamped it back onto the up pipe.
That way you can do all of your welding outside of the vehicle

The exhaust manifolds do not have to come out. Remove the passenger wheel/tire and the wheel well liner. You may find removing the down pipe will help for access. If you can weld the plug in with all installed you got some skills.
