I'd change the filter every 5K like you stated, but I'd also do an oil analysis too. What's another $20 for piece of mind...

I use the OEM interval of 7500 miles. I change my Oil Guard By-pass kit filter every other oil change and the main filter every oil change.

do you tow alot or drive in conditions that require you to change it out that much, or is it more for a just in case thing?

just gathering info, i thought sythetic should be able to go 10k with a filter change.

Same as HeavyAssault...only use Mobil1 5w-40, change primary oil filter with only Motorcraft at 7500 miles. I also use Amsoil's EaBp 100 >2 micron bypas filter and change it every other oil change or at 15,000 miles. I do dump the EaBp filter and thouroughly clean the top and refill it with oil as well before adding new oil to the system. I also use the Fumoto drain valve which helps (less mess) and a have a silver dollar sized magnet near the drain plug (since I no longer have the old drain plug magnet).

I've read a few reports that the Rotella 5w-40 loses it viscosity pretty quick in the oil shearing 6.0. I'm trying Mobile 1 diesel this time around.

Without a oil bypass kit I still couldnt see going 5000 miles in between oil changes. The guy before me changed his oil every 5 thousand miles and ran normal 15w40 and man you should see my injectors. They are all gummed up and burnt oil on them. After seeing that I couldnt even run synthetic oil 5000 miles without changing oil.

I researched OA's, oil reports till my head was ready to melt. I discovered the majority of users running bypass kits were only getting 10K (maybe better) out of the oil. So why tempt fate? I use the OEM interval of 7500 miles but I don't exceed 10k between changes. Sometimes work or other requirements will cause me to go above the 7500 so I try to stay under 10k at that time.

These motors aren't picky they just need clean fluids. I spent the money to get this motor and damn sure going to take care of it as best my knowledge and the knowledge we share will allow.
