turbo hesitation?? or normal?

I looked at an 03 Ford Excursion this evening with the 6.0L diesel in it. Seems like a very nice truck. If I buy this vehicle this would be the first one I purchase with a diesel motor. When driving it, it seemed to take a second(maybe not an actual second) before the turbo would kick it once stepping on the gas. Is this normal? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

yes that would be normal, its the turbo lag.when i floor it i blow pure black smoke for about 3 seconds before the turbo spools up than im GONE..
