Poor Fuel Mileage

So I have a new to me 2006 F250 6.0 with 126k on it. Runs great, no known or obvious issues. I have yet to break 13.5 mpg with it. Took a 750 mile round trip this weekend with a 16' enclosed trailer with a weight of about 2100 lbs. and averaged 10.5-10.8 mpg the entire trip. To me this is terrible with that kind of load. Past diesels I've owned don't get that low until I'm in the 10k range. The truck is bone stock other than 285 tires and 4" exhaust. Any ideas on what to look for? This is the kind of mileage I'd expect from a V10, not a diesel.

Yea that's pretty bad I agree. I can't say why your that low for sure. But I will say a tune will improve it to a degree. A FICM tune like the Atlas40 along with a mild ecm tune will help. I am averaging low 17's mpg on my truck and 20-21 highway only.

Something's up, could be low on boost or a injector or two. Have you had truck looked at ?

I am stock, and I get marginally better than that.

IMO, Only thing you can really expect to do is tune both the FICM and PCM to get better mileage. With tuning you may get 20 to 25 MPG. Other than that, highway tires may get you a little more. There's other things, which I think would be a stretch, but if you can measure temps on the brakes to see if one is hung, than that may help.

My tires are 275s. If the weather is cold out and my oil doesn't warm up, I'll dip to around 13 MPG on a four hour highway drive, otherwise, I get around 15 MPG unloaded. I forget towing an enclosed trailer at around that weight, but that was around 10 MPG for me. I did not even notice the trailer behind me, but the MPG went way down.

I have an Atlas 40 tune on order, unfortunately I'm 4th in line so it could be 6-8 weeks before I recieve the remote programmer. Funny or not so funny thing is I just went to drive somewhere and now have a no start condition. ICP is only reading 250 while cranking. Guess I'll be dealing with that first.

Yes to the no start being the bigger issue.

Regarding MPG... are you sure that you have a stock 3.73 rear end? If not, it's apples and oranges.

Yes, it has the stock 3.73 gears in it. It also reads 30psi on the stock boost gauge when wide open so I don't think it's related to low boost.

You might be better off sending you ficm to Ed at ficmrepair.com and you wont wait 6-8 weeks for your Atlas40. As long as you have a spare or another DD.

I have to say, your mileage is indeed crappy. When I moved to AK almost 5 years ago, I drove about 2600 miles, pulling about 10K. I averaged 16.9 miles hand calculated. That was with my '06.
I bought a '07 KR (after rolling my '06) and I have 275s BFG T/A Ko2 tires, 3.73 gears , banks CAI, synthetic oil only, Atlas 40 with 175/stock sticks.
I've gotten as high as 26 mpg going to Fairbanks and back last year. I normally average about 18 in town, depending on how hard I drive it and 20-22 on highway.

With that said, I'd look at a your brakes making sure nothing is dragging (look for discolored rotors, uneven caliper pad wear to start). How do you know for sure you have 3.73s? that will make a difference in your mpg.
Also have you replaced all the filters? run synthetic oil? Fuel additives (powerservice and/or Archoil)? Do you have a lift on the truck? or is is leveled?
Other thing to check is are you locked in 4wd (Auto v. Manual)?
mhatlen and 7.3 powerchoke like this.

I am in the same boat with poor fuel economy. I am starting to blame a couple of injectors due to the rough cold start at only 35 degrees. I drove 4 hour round trip on thanksgiving to my parents and only got 12.1 unloaded on the freeway at 68mph. I am on 35s but did not think that mileage would be that low on the freeway. Right now I am get 9-10 in the city and 12-12.9 on freeway.

FYI, in case you didn't know, PHP currently has their FICM programmer on sale for $350. I'd imagine they would credit your loaner purchase towards the full programmer if you wanted to go that route.

Unplug the ICP and see if it starts.

Double post, and more on topic.
I've lost about 2 mpg over the last couple of years for some reason. For mixed driving. I averaged 17 mpg in 2014, 16mpg in 2015 and currently at 15 mpg for 2016. I'm fairly certain I have a small boost leak (thinking intercooler), but I haven't had enough time to really pinpoint it yet. Other than that, I'm not sure what might be the culprit.
